The Beauty of the Psalms
There is so much beauty and richness conveyed in the Psalms. Each one speaks with a sincerity that flows from the heart of the writer. Their words capture the soul of the reader and carry it along to God’s holy throne. Whether it is a psalm of rejoicing and declaring the greatness of our God or a psalm of repentance and humility, there is a psalm somewhere that expresses our greatest desire and speaks to every troubled heart.
It is easy to empathize with the feelings that David was experiencing when Nathan confronted him after his adultery with Bathsheba. Although our actions may not have been at the level of David’s, every one of us has sinned at some point and felt very distant from God. Psalm 51 is such a beautiful response to the realization that we have sinned against our Heavenly Father.
It is an impassioned cry for mercy and forgiveness from someone who realizes the sin he has committed. David presents himself humbly before God with a deeply repentant heart. He pours out his sorrow to the Lord as he begins his prayer. “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so, you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.” (Psalm 51:1-4)
As Christians, we understand that because of the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus, all of our sins, past, present, and future are forgiven. Yet our growth as a Christian depends on our humility and desire to sin no more. David also understood what pleases God as he continued in verses 16 & 17. He says, “You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.”
Let our prayer today mirror David’s words found in verses 10-12, where he cries, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
Although we strive each day to do what is right and pleasing to God, the fact is that we are all fallible. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. May we never forget that we serve a God who listens to the cries of our heart and is full of mercy and love. May we humble ourselves before God each day and allow the Holy Spirit to continue His work in us.
