The Wisdom of Proverbs

Has anyone ever thought to themselves, “Wow, I probably should have not said that.” How often have we gotten ourselves into trouble by saying more than we should have or speaking when we should have stayed silent? Speaking for myself, this has been the story of my life. I still find myself saying more than I should or saying something that makes me look less than what I am hoping to convey.

We read some wonderful advice found in Proverbs 17:27-28 that says, “The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered. Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.”

The Book of Proverbs is a treasure trove of wisdom that is broken down into snippets of insight. It is filled with the timeless realities of simple wisdom that so many in this world fail to grasp. Christians and nonChristians alike would all benefit from reading a chapter of this book each day.

There are 31 chapters in the Book of Proverbs. If we committed ourselves to reading one chapter a day, then by the end of a month, we would have read the entire book. Now, here is the key, we need to start over at the beginning of each new month. It is only through the repetition of seeing and reading these daily proverbs that we will begin to live out those pearls of wisdom as they become incorporated into our daily lives.

Every proverb we read is a seed that is stored up in our heart. Each is a resource that the Holy Spirit can then use to help us exercise wisdom and understanding, especially in circumstances where each is needed.

As we pray for Godly wisdom and insight, let us pray that the Holy Spirit would encourage us to have a daily bible reading plan that includes a chapter of Proverbs.

Pray that God would grant us wisdom and understanding as we read and reread the treasures found in this wonderful book.

The truth is that wisdom must be sought after. Then, once found, it must be exercised and put into action. Every one of us will benefit greatly from a bit more wisdom in our life, and thanks to God, there is a book filled with it at our very fingertips.
