Our House Has Many Rooms
Have we ever thought about how our soul is like a house with many rooms? We have the kitchen, where we cook up our brilliant ideas. We have a living room where we entertain guests and a bathroom where we can clean ourselves up after rolling around in the mud for a while and many other rooms where we store our secrets. We also have bedrooms where our special guests are placed. One of those rooms is reserved for a permanent resident who lives with us. His name is the Holy Spirit.
As a very welcomed resident, we should ensure that the Holy Spirit has unfettered access to every room in our house. Sadly, too many of us have placed restrictions on where we allow the Spirit to roam. Then there are those crazy times when we actually send the Spirit of God to His room. Imagine that! If we really think about it, we are sending the Holy Spirit to His room every time we willfully sin. He is still in the house, but confined to one room. Up until then, He was there with us, speaking to us, trying to remind us of the path we are to follow. But when we choose to wilfully follow a different path, that is when we send our precious Holy Spirit to His room.
Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:19, “Do not quench the Spirit.” and in Ephesians 4:30. “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Part of the Holy Spirit’s duties are to wander throughout the house, peeking into every room, looking for anything that is ungodly in our life. We need to intentionally let Him wander freely throughout every room. This is the process of sanctification. We also need to give the Holy Spirit the permission to help us change anything that He feels needs correcting.
Let us pray that the Holy Spirit checks every room in our heart and brings correction wherever correction is needed.
Let us humble ourselves before our Lord and acknowledge that we are a work in progress. Let us thank the Lord for the work that He has done in us and that He is faithful to continue the good work that He has started.
As was mentioned many times in these devotionals, our life of sanctification is a day to day process. We need to remember that the Holy Spirit will only enter rooms where He is welcome. We also need to remember that He is God and cannot abide sin. So, if we truly want the Holy Spirit to help us grow as a disciple of Jesus, then we need to grant Him complete access to every room with the prayer that He will guide us in clearing each room from any ungodly clutter.
