Lord, I Have a Question
One of the greatest tools every Christian possesses is our ability to ask God questions. Whether it is when we are studying scripture or simply living our life. Our willingness to question God will often reveal to us a greater understanding of the mind and the ways of our Creator.
So here is something to think about. Is the act of questioning God on what we believe in fact an indication that we are doubting what we believe? Not necessarily. Perhaps it is all in how we ask the question. If our question is phrased something like this; “Lord, I have prayed and prayed for this to happen and nothing has changed, please grant me an understanding why my prayers have not been answered.” This is a good question to ask God.
If we ask the question this way; ““Lord, I have prayed and prayed for this to happen and nothing has changed. My prayers are never answered so what’s the use of praying?” This is not a good question to ask God.
Whether it is a good question or not is all in our intention for asking. As Pastor Andy explained in one of his messages, “are we asking God a question for clarification, or are we asking God a question because we doubt.”
Does God want us to ask Him questions? Absolutely. Asking God questions is one of the quickest ways to grow in our knowledge and understanding of our Creator. As James wrote in his letter, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:5-6)
Another wonderful verse to remember whenever we have questions for God is found in Isaiah 55:8-9 where God said, “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”
God wants us to understand His thinking and His ways. That is why He sent Jesus and why we have the Holy Spirit living within us. As Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:16, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.”
Pray that the Holy Spirit will grant us an inquisitive mind. Pray that we have the courage to bring every question to God, not because we doubt what we believe, but because we seek a greater understanding of what God is telling us.
The reality is that God has probably been asked whatever question may come to our mind many times. He relishes our questions because it is an indication of our desire to grow in our understanding of who He is. So be bold with our questions. Seek answers. Be willing to learn and grow as God grants us a greater understanding of the mysteries of our Creator.
