Counting Our Blessings

Let us take a moment and turn our thoughts to yesterday. Let us remember, if we can, what our thoughts were when we first awoke. Now, allow our memories of the day to begin to flow. Starting from when we were first getting ready for the day, then moving on to the various objectives we had planned and chores that we completed as we progressed through the morning. At any point during that several hour period, can we remember anything that we could count as a blessing from God?

Now, let us move our memories into yesterday afternoon. We are already into the full swing of the day and are probably in our grove as the day continues. Can we think of anything that happened to us yesterday afternoon that we can point to as a blessing from God?

As we continue our recollection of the last twenty four hours, let us remember our flow of events following our work day. Was our evening filled with family time, dinner and a winding down of our day, or was it a continuation of the day’s events? Regardless of how our evening progressed, was there anything that we can remember that we could count as a blessing from God?

When we think about counting our blessings, we usually look throughout our past and recall the big events where God showed up. However, it is very important to look at each day, preferably at the end of the day, and see all of the various ways that God has blessed us. It is impossible for any Christian to go through a day and not receive a variety of blessings from God. As we read in Lamentations 3:22-23, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

God blesses us in many different ways each and every day. Sadly, most of us take His daily blessings for granted, unless it is something that is pronounced and grabs our attention. The words of the psalmist in Psalms 118:24 speak a world of truth that many of us need to remember. It reminds us that “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

So let us take time to reach out to our Heavenly Father and proclaim that today is the day that the Lord has made for us. Thank Him that He is always with us, leading us and watching over us. Acknowledge that He is blessing us all throughout our day and that His love and faithfulness is everlasting.

The truth is that it is easy to become wrapped up in our day or to slip into our daily routine and fail to notice God’s blessings. Regardless of how well our day is going, or despite the challenges we are coping with, God is always blessing us in some fashion. May we always take a moment at some point in our day to count our blessings and to acknowledge the faithfulness of our loving God.
