Our Relationship with God
The truth about any relationship is that it is meant to be experienced in order for it to grow. No relationship is ever formed or is able to grow from someone simply sitting on the sidelines. Relationships are a part of the human experience that are meant to be engaged in, both physically and emotionally. The intellectual part of a relationship is actually superficial at best. Its purpose is to add a framework to build the relationship upon. Please do not misunderstand. It is critical, regarding having a meaningful relationship with our Savior, or any relationship for that matter, that we learn as much as we can about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. We must learn as much as we can about the truths of the Gospel and God’s Word. We must have a solid foundation on which to build a solid relationship.
This intellectual understanding of God is only the beginning. Sadly, the truth is that there are many throughout the world who know the bible extremely well, yet their personal relationship with Jesus is sorely lacking. It is because they have engaged so little of their faith whenever they were faced the struggles and trials of this life.
Paul describes the depth of his desire to have a greater relationship with Jesus in his words found in Philippians 3:7-11 where he says, “But whatever things were gained to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.”
Now that is someone who has a sincere desire to have a greater relationship with Jesus. One has to wonder how close we are to matching Paul’s desire for his relationship with his Savior? Do we count all that we have gained as rubbish and look only to gaining a closer relationship with our Lord? Do we have a deep desire to know Jesus and the power of His resurrection and to have fellowship with His sufferings? These are some deep questions that we need to ask ourselves.
Let us pray that the Holy Spirit strengthens our resolve to have a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Jesus.
Pray that the Spirit of God will guide us in all truths and that we will stand boldly, hand in hand with our Lord, as we go through every experience that life throws at us.
The truth is that life is a contact sport, meant to be lived and engaged. For anyone who is sitting on the sidelines, GET IN THE GAME! For any who are fearful about their future, ENGAGE YOUR FAITH! For any who are timid about stepping out. HAVE COURAGE FOR GOD IS WITH YOU. Do not end this life wishing that you had done more. Start doing today and start building a more solid relationship with our Lord Jesus.
