Tomorrow is not Guaranteed

How often do we take much of this life for granted? We leave for work in the morning, never thinking about the possibility that our loved ones may never see us walk back through our front door. We say goodbye to a friend or a spouse, never thinking about the possibility that those words may be the last words that we ever say to them. Everyday, there are people who leave their home, never realizing that today will be their last.

We read more on this reality in James 4:14 where it says, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

This is why it is so important that before we leave each day, we kiss our spouse and our children goodbye and tell them that we love them. Our parting words must be gentle and caring. Words that Jesus Himself would say if He were in our shoes. Regardless of how angry we may have been the night before, we need to ensure that the last words that our family hears from us are words of love.

Any anger we feel must be quickly resolved. Anger builds barriers and roadblocks that must be then broken down and removed before peace and love can prevail. The truth is that any delay in resolving our anger only strengthens the barriers and adds to the roadblocks. This is why we read in Ephesians 4:26-27, “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.”

Let us cherish every moment of every day as a gift given to us by God. Let us not dwell on the possibility that we may not see the end of the day, but on the reality that we are children of the Most High and that we are to live every moment of each day as a representative of our Lord Jesus.

Let us pray that our mind stays focused, as we move throughout our day, on how Jesus would want us to respond.

Let us pray that we always part ways with our loved ones and friends with the same actions and words that Jesus would use.

May we always remember that “this is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalms 118:3), and let us live every day as if it will be our last.
